Apprenticeships Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do I apply for a position?
Each year in October, QBuild places an advertisement in The Courier-Mail announcing its apprenticeship opportunities. When you see this advertisement, you can apply by completing the online application form.
Upon receiving your online application form, QBuild will send you an acknowledgment email to the return email address given. Please note that this email acknowledges that your application has been submitted and does not guarantee you an apprenticeship. Applicants will be selected for interview using a merit based process. Successful applicants will commence employment early in the new year (February).
If you would like further information regarding applying for an apprenticeship contact the Apprentice Training Advisor on 07 3224 5273.
How long will the apprenticeship take?
Initially, the apprentice will participate in a probation period of 3 months. During this time both the apprentice and employer can assess their compatibility and suitability to carry out the training agreement. During this time, either party can terminate the training agreement.
As a general rule, apprenticeships are completed over a four-year period; however the length of time can vary depending on the particular trade and whether the apprenticeship is time or competency based.
During this time you will gain skills and knowledge both at the workplace and through a registered training organisation such as TAFE.
What tools and equipment do I need?
QBuild will provide all uniforms, footwear, protective equipment and the tools of trade, as required.
How do I get to work? Do I need a motor vehicle?
QBuild does not require its apprentices to have a motor vehicle as part of their employment arrangement; however, it is the apprentices' responsibility to be at work on time.
What type of work will I be doing?
QBuild gives its apprentices the opportunity to work on many different work sites. For example, an apprentice may work at schools, police stations, prisons, private residences and most other government buildings. The work will consist of new construction, maintenance, restoration and renovation.
How will I know if my application is successful?
Interviews are usually held during January of the following year. If you are invited for an interview you will receive a letter advising you of the time and location.
During the interview you will be given the opportunity to discuss your work and educational achievements. You will need to produce original documentary evidence of your scholastic achievements, eg certificates, reports.
Applicants who are successful at the interview will receive a written offer of employment as an apprentice. The apprenticeship would commence during February of that year.
Applicants who are unsuccessful at interview will receive written notification.
